This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Once Daniel has Jolie he treats her as a temporary wife, even more like a prostitute, intending to give her a divorce when it's convenient for him. One can find it fascinating that he ends his account of the Revolution in 1794; Simon Schama, in his aforementioned book did the same thing (409).
